CNY Visit to SiLRA Home - February '14

Leo Club of Singapore Metropolitan started the horse year with the CNY visit to SiLRA Home on 15th February 2014, to bring joy and warmth to the elder residents during this festive season!

We were glad to have 21 Metro Leos and volunteers to join us for this meaningful event. In fact that was the very first time that we have received such an overwhelming response, we are very thankful for their time and heart in serving, which allowed us to have small chat with almost all the residents!!:) It was heart-warming to know that the elderly do remember some of us!!!

We distributed some goodies to the elderly, such as their favourite coffee powder and biscuits, a cushion and a red packet to wish them good health and a good year ahead. We would like to thank Leo Yufei for his partial sponsorship to buy these goodies for the residents!:)

Our talented Leos and volunteers also performed a few popular oldies to brighten up the residents' day and had karaoke session with the residents too.

I felt a bit saddening when an uncle told me he was depressed with his amputated limb, and life has become without a meaning and hope ever since. He has no other family member except a god-son, who only visit him once a year. I hope we could do this more often, conducting more interesting and interactive activities, to cheer them up, giving them something to look forward to. I felt impressed by the volunteers as they were very enthusiastic while interacting with the folks, and did not let language became a barrier between them. The residents have spent much time in the home, and I believe they hardly got the chance to go out due to their mobility limitations. It will be good if we have the manpower to bring them out, thus giving them something to look forward to in their lives.

Volunteering at SILRA adds more meaning to my life. Showing care and concern to “ah gong” and “ah mah” and listen to their life stories touched the deepest part of my heart. Nevertheless, our time at SILRA was filled with joy and laughter. A really fruitful way to spend my weekend.

Thank you all Metro Leos and volunteers!:)

It was a fun-filling morning and all of us spent a good time chatting with the elderly and it was great seeing the smiles on their faces. We hope to visit them again real soon!:)
