SWAMI home is a humble residential care
facility which lies relatively inconspicuous within the neighbourhood. The home houses
services such as physiotherapy, medical treatment rooms and rehabilitation services
all under one roof to enable its 242 residents to engage in different
treatments conveniently. Interesting
therapies carried out at home includes Pet Therapy and a Reminiscent Room –
where dementia patients look at items from the past to recollect memories. Many efficient services were provided for the residents and without generous sponsorship from various organisations, the home would
not have been so well equipped. Moreover, with the beautiful ambience and facilities, the home serves to reinforce the consideration to provide a
comfortable living environment for residents to enjoy, which in itself is a
very crucial and basic form of rehabilitation. The significant motto of SWAMI “Love
All Serve All” is also practiced in caring for all residents regardless of
race and religion - There is a special
prayer room where altars of different religions are placed for each individual
to practice their own spiritual faith.
On 24th August 2013, our Metro Leos and volunteers attended a day of visit to SWAMI Home and it
has been a fruitful and enjoyable learning experience interacting with the elders.
It was an eye-opener for most of the volunteers
as it was our first time interacting with elders who have dementia! The residents were very enthusiastic in a
game of pass-the-ball and colouring sessions. It was a great
learning experience getting to understand each individual resident’s condition
- albeit very briefly - in order to care for them adequately such as feeding
them appropriately. Even though the patients might never
remember the passionate volunteers’ faces, what is significant is the smiles we
have left on their faces during the visit.

It was my first time visiting SWAMI Home and I have enjoyed myself as much as the elderly residents did. We really have fun laughing and chit-chatting with each other. It was also the first time I tried coaxing an elderly to eat, together with the other volunteers. It really took team effort to do so, and there was a sense of achievement for all of us when she ate her food! Even though the elders might not remember us, what really matters is we make their day. :)
